Bela bartok 2

The word “Scherzo” means “little joke.” But the meter changes in this piece are certainly no joke to execute successfully.  The mixed meter consists of varying time signatures such as 7/8 and 3/8. Accents and tenuto sign indicate how to convey these changes. Constant interplay of eighth notes between hands can also be challenging. The long D major chord that cuts the piece in half establishes a sense of tonality and should be held dramatically. Another difficulty is following all of the marked articulation. However, this is crucial for setting the gleeful tone of the work.
