Carl Czerny

One of Czerny’s melodic exercises, this piece in binary form has a clear melody line and straightforward phrases, giving a chance to practice shaping a simple melody. Broken chords accompanying a singing melodic line are prevelant in this exercise. Since the majority of the piece has only a single line for each hand, it is a practical way to practice voicing one hand louder than the other. In this exercise, Czerny sustains the bass notes underneath broken chords, a common practice of the Classical era. With no large stretches, this piece is well-suited for small hands.
