The polka is a type of dance that originated in the nineteenth century in Eastern Europe. This light-hearted polka features grace notes, staccato, and chromaticism, all essential to the character of the piece. Students should be careful to keep their playing light and bouncy. The left hand takes up the melody in the second half of the piece, a feature that will help students practice voicing their left hand.
