The Gavotte is in the key of A Minor.  It has a lyrical and ornate melody in the right hand accompanied by chords in the left hand. The first variation changes the melody by adding fragments of scales in sixteenth notes, while maintaining the same accompaniment. The second variation has a solber character and also shows some fragments of scales to change the melody in the A section.  In the B section the variation is created by using fourth intervals in the right hand along with an ornament on the first group of each measure.

This piece is a great one to use to explain and invesitgate the variation form with your students.  One could even encourage them to write their own variations.
